Improve Your Health in 2015

Heart healthThe start of the new year is often a time for people to reflect on changes they want to make. Many make resolutions to live a healthier lifestyle. Those who are able to keep these resolutions often enjoy a longer, higher quality life with less time spent in the hospital. This year, think about steps you could take to improve the rest of your life.
  1. Quit Smoking. This is often the number one item listed for improving health and with good reason. Smoking is known to have numerous negative health impacts. The most commonly mentioned one is cancer. To increase the length and quality of your life, it's best to quit smoking. Are you thinking that it's easier said than done? No one denies that smoking is a powerful addiction. However, many products are available to assist you in your effort to quit, including patches, gum and even prescriptions. Consider contacting your health insurance provider to see if they offer a smoking cessation program to help.
  2. Lose Weight. Got a few extra pounds? Did you know that those extra pounds can cause a variety of medical issues, including heart disease and cancer? Losing just a little weight can have significant health benefits. Adding a moderate amount of exercise may be all that you need to lose those extra pounds. Some people find that tracking what they eat is enough to keep them from eating an extra cookie or two each day. They then notice the pounds slipping off.
  3. Reduce Sodium Intake. High blood pressure is a major problem in the US. Reducing sodium intake is one way to lower blood pressure. If you are cooking meals at home, consider reducing or eliminating the amount of salt in the recipes you are preparing. Taste the finished meal before adding salt. You may be surprised to find you don't miss the extra salt.
To increase your health, you don't need to spend hours a day at the gym or go on a salad only diet. Small, sustainable changes can be made that will have a positive impact on your health for the upcoming year. Try to tackle one thing at a time so you are not overwhelmed with too much change at once. Hopefully in May you will look back and realize you were able to keep your resolution!
